General FAQs

  • Angeleno Storage Center is a proposed Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project under development in Los Angeles County, California, approximately 3 miles east of downtown Acton, CA. The project will feature up to 1,150 Megawatts (MW) of batteries and help deliver reliable energy across Southern California. No solar photovoltaic (PV) panels would be included in the project footprint.

  • BESS projects are a group of batteries connected to the grid that can store and release energy into the electricity grid as needed, adding greater capacity and resilience to the energy system.

  • Angeleno Storage Center is being developed by Avantus (formerly 8minute), a leading California-based solar and energy storage company with more than a decade of success across the state.

Our team brings 50 years of combined energy storage project experience and an impeccable safety record, which has been a valuable and trusted resource to the industry, informing and strengthening safety standards and best practices.

  • The project area under consideration comprises up to 68 total acres of private land, including up to roughly 54 acres occupied by battery storage. The rest of the acreage will be dedicated to a safety buffer surrounding the batteries and other supporting infrastructure. The proposed project includes the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), a transmission line between the BESS and Vincent Substation, and other associated infrastructure.

  • The land is privately owned and is under contract with Avantus. Should the project be approved, all contracted parcels will be purchased prior to the start of construction. You can view a site map here.

  • Angeleno’s location was selected because of its proximity to the large Southern California Edison (SCE) Vincent Substation. Vincent Substation is centrally located between renewable energy generation in the California desert and Central Valley, and energy demand in greater Los Angeles and elsewhere. This will allow Angeleno to be an efficient and reliable source of backup energy to Los Angeles County and the greater Southern California grid during times of high power demand, all while increasing the integration of renewable energy into the grid.

  • Angeleno is in early stages and Avantus has not yet submitted a permitting application. Avantus is coordinating with Los Angeles County stakeholders and the Los Angeles County Fire Department, in addition to conducting community outreach.

  • The Southern California Edison (SCE) Vincent Substation will connect the Angeleno Storage Center to the energy grid serving homes and businesses in Los Angeles County and across the state of California.

  • No. Angeleno would generally relieve grid congestion. For example, on windy and sunny days when renewable energy production is high, Angeleno would ease grid congestion by absorbing the excess energy. Angeleno's batteries could then release energy when needed, such as hot evenings when the sun goes down, to lower reliance on expensive and outdated energy sources.

  • Yes. Angeleno Storage Center will feature 24/7 security and monitoring to ensure the safety of the project and equipment. The project may include additional security measures, including warning reflective signage, controlled access points, security camera systems, and/or security guard vehicle patrols to deter trespassing and unauthorized activities.

  • There are over 50 utility-scale BESS projects operating across Southern California, including in nearby Lancaster. There are several more projects under construction or in advanced stages of development across LA County and Antelope Valley, including in Santa Clarita, Rosamond and Mojave. The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) anticipates that 28.4 GW of battery storage will be constructed by 2035 to reduce congestion and electricity costs. To reach that goal, the state will need to grow its energy storage capacity by 5x, relying on utility-scale projects like Angeleno to be deployed near available transmission. Most areas with 500 kV substations, like Vincent Station, have multiple projects in development.

  • Angeleno Storage Center will advance grid stability and energy independence for California and Greater Los Angeles. The energy storage project will allow energy to be stored and dispatched to the grid when most needed in a safe and reliable manner.

Siting & Environmental Considerations

  • This project will require a new transmission line from the project site to the nearby SCE Vincent Substation. The site for the project was selected, in part, to reduce the required total length of the new transmission line to approximately one mile.

  • Avantus has a positive track record with local, state, and federal wildlife agencies as well as with environmental organizations. Our past projects have garnered support from respected groups including the Sierra Club, Audubon California, Defenders of Wildlife, and the Natural Resources Defense Council.

The project will be designed to avoid direct and indirect impacts to local wildlife species, including perimeter barriers to direct wildlife away from the facility, night lighting that avoids attracting nocturnal wildlife, transmission components that avoid and minimize wildlife electrocution risk, and project siting that includes preservation of open space within the Santa Clara River Significant Ecological Area (SEA).

  • During construction, we expect our crew will generate some noise and add cars/trucks to certain roads, and we will aim to minimize those potential impacts.

As always, we will aim to be respectful of our neighbors and aim to keep construction noise to a minimum. All site activity is subject to and will comply with Los Angeles County noise ordinances.

Project Safety

  • Battery storage is proven, safe and reliable with thousands of operating projects around the country. Safety is one of our top priorities, and the battery storage team at Avantus brings nearly 50 years of combined energy storage project experience with an impeccable safety record.

Economics & Employment

  • Angeleno Storage Center is not expected to cost local residents anything, and is expected to bring economic and grid reliability benefits to the Los Angeles County. In fact, BESS projects generally lower the cost of energy, which particularly benefits lower-income households, where a higher portion of income is spent on energy.

Over the project’s lifetime, Angeleno is expected to generate over half a billion dollars in tax revenue, helping fund an array of services like schools, public safety and street services. In addition, Avantus partners with local communities by contributing funds and expertise toward local education and sports programs, workforce training, facilities benefiting local residents, and more.

  • No. Local electricity rates will not be directly impacted by this project.

  • Please visit this website periodically for updates about future job fairs, or connect with your local unions to learn more about requirements and training.
